After Action Report: WW II Weekend, Jefferson Barracks, St Louis, MO 14-17 April 2011 First Special Service Force, 6th CO 3rd REG Attendance: S/SGT Adkins G S/SGT Hanley E SGT Dolan, A SGT Weston D SGT Weston D sr CPL Erbar K PFC Schorber, R PVT Holden M PVT Carlin B PVT Carlin T PVT ????? R (*NG) And from the 68th Armored Infantry Battalion, 14th Armored Division, Rich Schaffer with his Halftrack, Mike Penny with his truck, Cpl Tater Tot with his Motor Pool Display, LT Brown G, 1st SGT Burton S, PFC Brown A, the Nurse, (sorry missed your name). We also had four members of the 1/25th Infantry Australian from St Charles MO and 5 members of the 35th ID from Washington MO Bob, Andy and I started to set up the display on Thursday night 1700 with the signs and barricades from the Champaign Campaign, along with my 5 man tent and the camo net fly and the Clearing Station display. Friday we added two more 5 man tents the Motor Pool Display the GP Small and a fly. Saturday another 5 man mountain tent. A large amount of canvas was left down due to the weather. There were a great many buss loads of school kids on Friday, but very few stopped at our camp, even though we were the first one by the parking lot. It rained early that morning, then again in the afternoon with pea to marble size hale; we had pizza delivered just after the storm. Saturday it rained off and on all day, mostly light drizzle, not too many visitors too the camps, displayed covered with a tarp most of the day. Both battles were a lot of fun, the Force, having one of the only two anti tank weapons with which too take on the STUG, the other with the 68th AIB was tasked to take out the STUG. We formed a hunter killer team of two bazookas and 5 riflemen to hunt this think down. To make a long story short, I will add two more Swastikas to old Buster the bazooka. The Dance Saturday night was a nice change of pace after two days of rain. Not very crowded, a lot of good people around, cold beer, good tunes, and a fight right in the middle of the dance floor, (staged), the MP’s did a fine job of restoring order. Sunday the weather was perfect, the camp slowly came down as each member prepared to bug out. Some stayed for the battle, but by early afternoon, most were gone.
This was WW II Weekend, by now you know what to expect, and it did rain, so what? I go to events to get away, be with friends, make new ones, have fun and to in the most tiny way, to try to understand what it was like to have been a combat soldier, I know I never can, I did not serve, but if playing army in the snow, rain, mud, heat what ever, can help me to appreciate the Service of our Veterans, then a little wet canvas is not a lot of trouble. See you next year! S/SGT Adkins, G.A. FSSF 6-3 Commanding | |
